Heat Pumps vs Boilers

You may wonder what type of heating system would best suit your home and what is the difference between heat pumps and boilers.
Our team at Greenside recommends that you carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option before making a decision.
While traditional boilers have been popular for many years, heat pumps offer a more eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative.

One of the main benefits of heat pumps is their improved energy efficiency. They require less energy than boilers so you can expect lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions. Heat pumps are also versatile, providing heating and cooling options for year-round use.

Boilers, on the other hand, remain a reliable heating option for many homeowners. However, they can be more expensive to operate and maintain than heat pumps. Boilers heat water to provide warmth, which can be less efficient than extracting heat from the air or ground.

Upgrading your heating system

Upgrading your existing heating system is a big decision, and we want to ensure you understand all the requirements and costs of installing the new one. Before installing a heat pump at your home, it is essential to determine that your current heating system is capable of keeping your property warm in the cold season.

Our standard procedure is to thoroughly assess your property to determine the best solution that fits your needs, including calculating your heating needs, evaluating your current system’s compatibility with a heat pump, and ensuring that your property has adequate insulation.

Controlling your heat pump

Controlling your Heat Pump

When using a Vaillant aroTHERM heat pump, we highly recommend pairing it with the Vaillant sensoCOMFORT controller for optimal performance. This user-friendly control system lets you easily adjust your preferred temperature, schedule your heat pump’s operation, and monitor your energy consumption. With the Vaillant sensoCOMFORT control, you can easily customise your heating requirements and achieve maximum comfort without hassle.

Protecting your Heat Pump

The best way to extend your heat pump’s lifespan and ensure that it is working at its highest efficiency is to have it serviced and maintained annually. Keeping the area around the outdoor unit clear of debris and leaves allows for adequate airflow. Additionally, regular cleaning or replacement of the air filters can prevent dust and dirt buildup that may impact the performance of your heat pump.

Also, consider installing a surge protector to protect your heat pump from power surges that can cause damage.

Jeff in Newcastle

Jeff, a retired fella in his 60s, living in Newcastle, required a heating system upgrade. His old system, over 15 years old and inefficient, needed to be converted from a regular system to a combi boiler. Additionally, Jeff desired the removal of the cylinder to create extra storage space. To ensure peace of mind, the customer requested an extended warranty for the new system. The chosen solution was a Baxi 800 boiler with a 10-year warranty. The conversion process was estimated to take two days to complete and completed on time.

Mr Mongan

Mr Mongan and his partner, a professional couple in their 30s, sought a heating upgrade as part of their property extension. The existing boiler, which had been in place since the house was built, was 12 years old and required replacement. They opted for a new Atag system boiler, which offered a generous 14-year warranty. The Atag system was configured for low flow temperature on the heating side and high flow temperature for the cylinder flow, prioritising domestic hot water (PDHW). The project involved a three-day timeline for both boiler relocation and upgrade.

“Fast, efficient and completed with respect to the weather inclement at the time…”
Ms Perkins

Ms Perkins, of Prudhoe, Tyne Valley, experienced a breakdown of her 12-year-old combi boiler. The old boiler, being a cheap model and lacking proper maintenance or servicing, was deemed beyond economical repair.

Due to the urgency of the situation, an emergency swap was required. As a solution, a new Baxi 800 boiler with a 10-year warranty was chosen for the replacement. The entire swap process was estimated to be completed within a single day.
